Reasons why artificial solar lighting XELIOS is chosen for performance evaluation of infrared sensors

Why is artificial solar lighting being used to evaluate the performance of infrared sensors?

There are many infrared sensors used around us. Infrared sensors are used in everyday objects such as automatic doors, motion sensors that turn on lights when people approach them, automatic faucets that turn on when you place your hands close to them, and remote controls for TVs and air conditioners. Recently, infrared sensors are also used in advanced electrical appliances such as cleaning robots and IH cooking heaters.

In particular, modern home appliances equipped with infrared sensors are at risk of false operation/non-operation due to natural sunlight coming in through windows. When the sunlight hits the sensor’s light-receiving part, other infrared signals cannot be received because the sunlight is overwhelmingly stronger.

With our artificial solar lighting, it is possible to conduct simulation tests of false operation/non-operation caused by natural sunlight, regardless of if it rains or if it is night

Of course, manufacturers take measures, but they can only recreate the state of natural sunlight exposure during the daytime of a sunny day. Moreover, the sun rises from the east and sets to the west, and keeps moving. Also, if there are clouds, it could easily change the conditions. Constant irradiation under a fixed condition is needed in order to be able to compare products before and after improvement.

For infrared sensors, sunlight is noise, in a way. The ability to operate accurately when exposed to strong noise naturally affects sales. If a reputation of a product that has damaged an object by not being able to stop for an obstacle is spread on social media, the reputation of this product will be severely degraded. For customers who actually use the product, it is taken for granted that it works properly, and they do not want to use a product that does not work as it should.

XELIOS artificial solar lighting is used to check the operation of sensors on devices equipped with infrared sensors.

In particular, the super spotlight lighting type (XG-500EFSS), which can irradiate with the same brightness and intensity as direct sunlight, is used by many sensor manufacturers. For evaluation of individual sensors, the compact 100W series super spotlight lighting type XG-100ESS/EFSS is also used.

Furthermore, since the spectral characteristics close to sunlight do not change until the end of the lightning life, tests can be performed under the same light conditions at any time

The great thing about artificial solar lighting is not only that its spectral characteristics are close to natural sunlight, but also the fact that they do not change until the end of its life. Therefore, when comparing the last year’s product lineup with this year’s lineup, there is the advantage of being able to evaluate under the same light conditions.

The super spotlight lighting type looks the same as the standard shape in the photo. By replacing the internal reflecting mirror with a total reflecting elliptical mirror and adjusting it, it is possible for the product to irradiate with the same brightness as direct sunlight (100000Lx) or the same irradiation intensity (1kW/m²).

Recently, there has been a considerable increase in inquiries related to the evaluation of various infrared sensors. In addition to electronics manufacturers, a wide range of users, including housing construction material manufacturers and machine manufacturers, use artificial solar lighting to evaluate their products with built-in infrared sensors. We have received high praise from many customers for our high accuracy in simulating natural sunlight.
